Sweden Opens World's First Steel Plant

In 2016, SSAB, LKAB and Vattenfall joined forces to create HYBRIT – an initiative that endeavors to revolutionize steel-making. HYBRIT aims to replace coking coal, traditionally needed for ore-based steel making, with hydrogen. The result will be the world’s first fossil-free steel-making technology, with virtually no carbon footprint. Instead of CO2 emissions the by-product will be water.
SSAB aims for the first fossil-free steel to be commercially available by 2026, and to become fossil free in its operations by 2045. If successful, HYBRIT means that Sweden’s CO2 emissions can be reduced by 10% and Finland’s by 7%.
