BMW will develop a version of its X5 SUV model which will run on hydrogen fuel-cells.
The model, named i Hydrogen NEXT will initially get a limited production run starting in 2022.
Toyota Motor Corp. will supply the fuel-cells for the model.
According to BMW CEO Oliver Zipse, the fuel-cell technology ‘could have the potential to become another pillar in the portfolio of BMW’.
Importantly, cars running on hydrogen are a considered a highly potential alternative to other forms of sustainable mobility, such as electric cars. This is because hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles can face long ranges and refuel quickly.
